             Contemporary wearable metal art pieces and sculpture where artists reimagine the work

             of artists who have passed, in homage and dedication to the practices which inform

             their own. Co-Sponsored by MAG and Macchiarini Creative Design.


2011 - Tell-Tale: Concocting Queer Mythologies

             A satellite arts exhibition in concert with the Queer Cultural Centers QIY: Queer it

             Yourself: Tools for Survival at SOMArts.


2010 - Tales of the Sissy: Writing Queer Life in the City

             Writing/reading/performance art series showcasing the talents of internationally

            acclaimed artists, writers and performers.


2010 - BEAST!:

             A modern menagerie and multimedia arts exhibition. Beast is a contemporary, fantastical

             twist on the bestiary. lush, itchy, writhing and fantastical beastly concoctions from a

             variety of talented Bay Area artists. Beast showcases interactive installations, works on

             paper, sculpture and scent.


2008 - Dissolve:

             A mixed media exhibition of installation, sculpture, and works on paper by eight San

             Francisco and out of state artists who have set out to dissect and interpret the

             conceptual, emotional, and cultural constructs of the word dissolve.


2008 - Mnemosyne:

             Five local sculpture and installation artists investigate memory as perception, process,

             form, consumption and physical transcription.


Teaching Experience:


2009-2016 Scintillant Studios: Metalsmithing Instructor.

                      Provided technical instruction, concept and design guidance to beginners and advance students. Teaches all basic skills such as:            

                      sawing, filing, sanding, soldering, stone setting, riveting, roller printing, patina and finishing, as well as advanced techniques such as:                         etching, chasing repoussé, fold-forming, dapping/doming, hydraulic press, milling/reuse of old metals, advanced stone settings,          

                      advanced soldering techniques, keum-boo, enameling, chain making, fabricating findings, raising, hinge making, boxes and locket                               construction.


2012-2015 Home Studio: Private Instruction

                     Provides a project-based-learning environment to students interested in learning the craft of metalsmithing. Offers technical          

                     instruction and guidance regarding concept and design as well as all of the techniques stated above.


2011-2012 Celsius and Beyond: Metalsmithing Instructor

                     Instructed students at this science based camp for middle school aged children, 9-14. Taught students all beginning metalsmithing                              techniques to construct small metal sculptures, pendants and sterling silver rings with bezel set stones. Introduced guidance        

                     concerning concepts and design.


2010-2012 Million Fishes Gallery: Workshop Instructor

                     Mixed Media, Sculpture and Mold-Making Workshops offered to the public.


2007-2010 Sub/Mission, Balazo 18: Metalsmithing Instructor

                     Project based learning atmosphere. Led students in learning techniques such as soldering, stone setting, forging and a wide variety of                           fabrication skills to aid in the construction of their wearable artworks.


2007            New Door Ventures: Visiting Artist and Workshop Leader

                      Worked with youth to develop and produce a mural representing a diverse group of visions and experiences. New Door provides jobs,                         job-readiness and supportive community to youth with histories of homelessness, substance abuse and extreme poverty.

                     worked on various projects including a giant heart sculpture (for the SF Hearts In San Francisco project) constructed from woven          

                     copper tubing.


Special Projects:


2008-2011 Aorta Magazine: Managing editor/Grant Writer.

                    Conducted interviews, edited layouts, oversaw production, organized and participated in collective based production, wrote grants and                       secured funding for this high-gloss, beautifully printed, full color Fine Arts magazine- curating the queer and feminist visual arts in                             digital print and independent media.


2010-2011 The Dragon Smelter @ Burning Man:

                    Worked as a welder, metalsmith, caster and more as a part of a small team to Rebuild this 20' x 30' fire breathing steel dragon which                           holds a functional crucible in its belly. Lead artist: Daniel Macchairini. Demonstrated live casting and educational events to and the                             public in efforts to demystify metal arts.

Chrystal Sunshine is a studio metalsmith and installation artist, who hailes from the Northwest and came to the Bay Area in 1999. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Academy of Arts University, San Francisco where she focused on metalsmithing, installation and sculpture. She has worked as a production metalsmith, caster and sculptural assistant for esteemed Bay Area companies and sculptors including: Jeanine Payer, Tor Archer, J.R. Casting and the Macchiarini family. Through her work in various community spaces locally, in Santa Fe, New Mexico and in Alaska, she has had the privilege to learn and the opportunity to teach countless and intricate techniques for working in metal.


Chrystal has taught metalsmithing to adults and youth, both privately in her studio and in institutions such as Celsius and Beyond, Balazo 18, Scintillant Studios, and Macchiarini Creative Design. She has curated and coordinated visual arts exhibitions and multi-disciplinary events in the Bay Area for the last 10 years, in print and in well respected galleries. Her work has been exhibited around the country at such venues as Sanchez Art Center, the Macy's Passport runway show, and Femina Potens Gallery in San Francisco.


Chrystal was awarded a fellowship to Vermont Studio Center where she attended as a resident in Fall 2007. She served as a three-year resident of the Million Fishes Arts Collective, in the Mission District of San Francisco, where she maintained an active studio practice, taught classes, worked to curate exhibitions in a public storefront gallery and launched grant giving programs to the arts community of San Francisco. Chrystal is a current member of the Metal Arts Guild and the Society of North American Goldsmiths.

Chrystal can be found tending her lush food forest outside her Bay area home, chasing her wild toddler and creating jewelry and small metal sculptures intended to serve as wearable and workable altar pieces.
